rāgātmikā-bhakti mukhyā vraja-vāsi-jane

rāgātmikā-bhakti mukhyā vraja-vāsi-jane |
tāra anugata bhaktira ‘rāgānugā’ nāme ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 2.22.144)

“Rāgātmikā-bhakti is principal and [found] in the residents of Vraja. Bhakti which follows it is called rāgānugā [-bhakti].”

virājantīm abhivyaktāṁ

virājantīm abhivyaktāṁ vraja-vāsi-janādiṣu |
rāgātmikām anusṛtā yā sā rāgānugocyate ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.270)

“That [type of bhakti] which follows the rāgātmikā-bhakti [i.e., the bhakti constituted purely of rāga] beautifully manifest in the residents of Vraja and other persons is known as rāgānugā-bhakti.”

rāgamayī bhaktira haya ‘rāgātmikā’ nāma |
tāhā śuni lubdha haya kona bhāgyavān ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 2.22.147)

“Bhakti constituted of rāga is called rāgātmikā. Hearing of it, some fortunate person becomes intensely desirous [of it].”

iṣṭe gāḍha-tṛṣṇā ‘rāga’—ei svarūpa-lakṣaṇa |
iṣṭe āviṣṭatā—ei taṭastha-lakṣaṇa ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 2.22.146)

“Intense thirst for the object of one’s desire is the intrinsic characteristic of rāga. Absorption in the object of one’s desire is the extrinsic characteristic of rāga.”

iṣṭe svārasikī rāgaḥ

iṣṭe svārasikī rāgaḥ paramāviṣṭatā bhavet |
tan-mayī yā bhaved bhaktiḥ sātra rāgātmikoditā ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.272)

“That which is a cause of intense natural absorption in the object of one’s desire [i.e., intense desire constituted of prema] shall be [called] rāga. That bhakti which is constituted of that [i.e., such rāga] shall be called rāgātmikā [-bhakti] here [i.e., in this text].”

yatra rāgānavāptatvāt pravṛttir upajāyate |
śāsanenaiva śāstrasya sā vaidhī bhaktir ucyate ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.6)

“That [type of sādhana-bhakti] in which the motivation [for engaging in bhakti] is produced not because of the attainment liking (rāga) [for bhakti] but only by the ruling of śāstra is called vaidhī-sādhana-bhakti.”

tad dhi tat-tad-vraja-krīḍā-dhyāna-gāna-pradhānayā |
bhaktyā sampadyate preṣṭha-nāma-saṅkīrtanojjvalam ||
(Bṛhad Bhāgavatāmṛta: 2.5.218)

“That [i.e., the prema that leads to attainment of the Beloved, one’s Iṣṭa-deva, in Goloka], bright with saṅkīrtana of the names of the Beloved, is certainly manifested through bhakti in which meditation on and singing of the [Beloved’s] various acts of play in Vraja are primary.”

nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema sādhya kabhu naya

nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema sādhya kabhu naya |
śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte karaye udaya ||
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 2.22.104)

“Eternally existent Kṛṣṇa-prema is never something to be produced [i.e., created, lit., accomplished]. It [being eternal existent] manifests into a heart purified by śravaṇa and so forth [i.e., by the practices of sādhana-bhakti].”

kṛti-sādhyā bhavet sādhya-bhāvā sā sādhanābhidhā |
nitya-siddhasya bhāvasya prākaṭyaṁ hṛdi sādhyatā ||
(Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: 1.2.2)

“That [aspect of uttamā-bhakti] which is to be accomplished by action [of the senses] and by which bhāva is to be accomplished shall be known as sādhana [-bhakti]. Manifestation of eternally accomplished bhāva into the heart is [the intended sense of its] being an object to be accomplished.”
