अनित्याशुचिदुःखानात्मसु नित्यशुचिसुखात्मख्यातिरविद्या ।
anityāśuci-duḥkhānātmasu nitya-śuci-sukhātma-khyātir avidyā |
(Yoga-sūtra: 2.5)
“Ignorance (avidyā) is considering the self, which is eternal, pure, and joyful, to be the non-self, which is impermanent, impure, and miserable.”
[Alternate reading:] “Ignorance (avidyā) is considering the impermanent to be permanent, the impure to be pure, the miserable to be joyful, and the non-self to be the self.”
