    mayy arpita-mano-buddhir yo mad-bhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ ||

    “My bhakta—one who is non-inimical, friendly, and indeed compassionate towards all beings, free from possessiveness, free from egotism, equal towards suffering and happiness, forbearing, ever satisfied, a yogī, self-restrained, of firm conviction, and of mind and intellect offered to me—is dear to me.”

  • pada-dyuti-vinirdhuta-smara-parārdha-rūpoddhatir
    dṛg-añcala-kalā-naṭī-paṭimabhir mano-mohinī |
    sphuran-nava-ghanākṛtiḥ parama-divya-līlā-nidhiḥ
    kriyāt tava jagat-trayī-yuvati-bhāgya-siddhir mudam ||
    (Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi: 1.5)

    “[Paurṇamāsī blesses Śrī Rādhā:] He by the luster of whose feet
    The pride of beauty
    In a hundred quadrillion Kāmadevas
    Is destroyed,
    He alluring to the mind
    By means of the deftness of the dancing
    Of the artistry [i.e., side-long glances] in the corners of his eyes,
    His whose figure resembles a shining fresh cloud,
    He who is an ocean of paramount, divine līlā,
    He who is the fruition of the good fortune
    Of the young women throughout the three worlds—
    May [he] bring about your delight.”

  • adhiṣṭhānaṁ tathā kartā karaṇaṁ ca pṛthag-vidham |
    vividhāś ca pṛthak-ceṣṭā daivaṁ caivātra pañcamam ||
    śarīra-vāṅ-manobhir yat karma prārabhate naraḥ |
    nyāyyaṁ vā viparītaṁ vā pañcaite tasya hetavaḥ ||
    tatraivaṁ sati kartāram ātmānaṁ kevalaṁ tu yaḥ |
    paśyaty akṛta-buddhitvān na sa paśyati durmatiḥ ||
    (Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā: 18.14–6)

    “(1) The locus [i.e,, the body], (2) the doer [i.e., the jīva], (3) the different types of instruments [i.e., the senses], (4) the various different functions [e.g., those of the prāṇas], and (5) herein the fifth, the Divine [i.e., the Inner Regulator (Antaryāmī), Paramātmā]—whatever action a person undertakes with the body, speech, or mind, be it right or wrong [i.e., dharmic or adharmic, śāstric or non-śāstric], its causes are these five. This being so, one who sees only oneself as the doer in this regard is ignorant because of having an unrefined understanding and does not [actually] see.”

  • na kartṛtvaṁ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛjati prabhuḥ |
    na karma-phala-saṁyogaṁ svabhāvas tu pravartate ||
    (Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā: 5.14)

    “The Lord creates neither the doership, nor the actions, nor the connection with the results of actions of a person. Rather, the disposition (svabhāva) [of a person] prompts [these].”

  • na deśa-niyamo rājan na kāla-niyamas tathā |
    vidyate nātra sandeho viṣṇor nāmānukīrtane ||
    kālo’sti dāne yajñe ca snāne kālo’sti saj-jape |
    viṣṇu-saṅkīrtane kālo nāsty atra pṛthivī-tale ||
    (Vaiṣṇava-cintāmaṇi; cited in Hari-bhakti-vilāsa: 11.412–413)

    “O King, there is no regulation in regard to place, and no regulation in regard to time with respect to continuous kīrtana of Viṣṇu’s name. There is no doubt in this regard. There is a [designation of propriety with respect to] time for charity and sacrifice, and there is a [designation of propriety with respect to] time for bathing and proper japa. There is no [designated proper or improper] time here on the surface of the earth for saṅkīrtana of Viṣṇu [i.e., Bhagavan-nāma-saṅkīrtana can be done at any time].”
