Śrī Śivāṣṭakam
A poem of eight verses in obeisance to Śrī Śiva

In his Śrī Kṛṣṇa-caitanya-caritāmṛta (3.8.13–21), Śrī Murāri Gupta recounts that during his first journey from Nadia to Jagannātha Purī, Śrīman Mahāprabhu recited this Śivāṣṭakam before the deity of Śrī Śiva known Bhuvaneśvara in the city in Odissa named Bhuvaneśvara after him.
नमो नमस्ते त्रिदशेश्वराय
भूतादिनाथाय मृडाय नित्यम् ।
गङ्गातरङ्गोत्थितबालचन्द्र
चूडाय गौरीनयनोत्सवाय ॥१॥
namo namas te tridaśeśvarāya
bhūtādi-nāthāya mṛḍāya nityam |
gaṅgā-taraṅgotthita-bāla-candra-
cūḍāya gaurī-nayanotsavāya ||1||
Let obeisance and obeisance
Be ever unto you,
The lord of the devas,
The master of the bhūtas and others,
You who are compassionate,
You whose crown is the young [i.e., the newly waxing crescent] moon
Arisen from the waves of the Gaṅgā,
You who are a festival for the eyes for Gaurī …
सुतप्तचामीकरचन्द्रनील
पद्मप्रवालाम्बुदकान्तिवस्त्रैः ।
सनृत्यरङ्गेष्टवरप्रदाय
कैवल्यनाथाय वृषध्वजाय ॥२॥
sutapta-cāmīkara-candra-nīla-
padma-pravālāmbuda-kānti-vastraiḥ |
sa-nṛtya-raṅgeṣṭa-vara-pradāya
kaivalya-nāthāya vṛṣa-dhvajāya ||2||
You with garments radiant like freshly molten gold,
The moon, blue lotuses, coral, and clouds
Who are a bestower of desired boons
Along with dancing and merriment,
You who are the lord of kaivalya [i.e., perfect absorption in the self],
You whose emblem is a bull …
सुधांशुसूर्याग्निविलोचनेन
तमोभिदे ते जगतः शिवाय ।
सहस्रशुभ्रांशुसहस्ररश्मि
सहस्रसंजित्त्वरतेजसेऽस्तु ॥३॥
sudhāṁśu-sūryāgni-vilocanena
tamo-bhide te jagataḥ śivāya |
sahasra-śubhrāṁśu-sahasra-raśmi-
sahasra-saṁjit-tvara-tejase’stu ||3||
You the dispeller of darkness
With [your three] eyes of the moon, the sun, and fire,
You who are the auspiciousness (śiva) of the world,
You whose luster
Quickly surpasses a thousand moons
And a thousand suns
A thousand times …
नागेशरत्नोज्ज्वलविग्रहाय
शार्दूलचर्मांशुकदिव्यतेजसे ।
सहस्रपत्रोपरि संस्थिताय
वराङ्गदामुक्तभुजद्वयाय ॥४॥
nāgeśa-ratnojjvala-vigrahāya
śārdūla-carmāṁśuka-divya-tejase |
sahasra-patropari saṁsthitāya
varāṅgadāmukta-bhuja-dvayāya ||4||
You whose figure is bright
With the jewels of the lord of the nāgas [i.e., Ananta Śeṣa],
You of divine luster whose garment is a tiger skin,
You who are seated upon a thousand-petalled lotus,
You whose two arms are decorated with excellent bangles …
सुनूपुरारञ्जितपादपद्म
क्षरत्सुधाभृत्यसुखप्रदाय ।
विचित्ररत्नौघविभूषिताय
प्रेमानमेवाद्य हरौ विदेहि ॥५॥
sunūpurā-rañjita-pāda-padma-
kṣarat-sudhā-bhṛtya-sukha-pradāya |
vicitra-ratnaugha-vibhūṣitāya
premānam evādya harau videhi ||5||
You who a bestower joy
Upon the servitors of your nectar exuding lotus feet
Which are illumined by fine ankle bells,
You who are adorned with a multitude of variegated jewels.
May you now bestow [upon me] only prema for Hari.
श्रीराम गोविन्द मुकुन्द शौरे
श्रीकृष्ण नारायण वासुदेव ।
इत्यादिनामामृतपानमत्त
भृङ्गाधिपायाखिलदुःखहन्त्रे ॥६॥
śrī-rāma govinda mukunda śaure
śrī-kṛṣṇa nārāyaṇa vāsudeva |
ity ādi-nāmāmṛta-pāna-matta-
bhṛṅgādhipāyākhila-duḥkha-hantre ||6||
“O Śrī Rāma, O Govinda, O Mukunda, O Śauri,
O Śrī Kṛṣṇa, O Nārāyaṇa, O Vāsudeva!”
Unto you who are the king of the bees
Maddened by drinking
The nectar of such names [of Hari],
You who are a destroyer of all suffering …
श्रीनारदाद्यैः सततं सुगोप्य
जिज्ञासितायाशु वरप्रदाय ।
तेभ्यो हरेर्भक्तिसुखप्रदाय
शिवाय सर्वगुरवे नमो नमः ॥७॥
śrī-nāradādyaiḥ satataṁ sugopya-
jijñāsitāyāśu vara-pradāya |
tebhyo harer bhakti-sukha-pradāya
śivāya sarva-gurave namo namaḥ ||7||
You who are always inquired from by Śrī Nārada and others
About that which is most confidential,
You who are a quick bestower of boons,
You who are a bestower of the joy of bhakti to Hari,
[Unto you,] Śiva,
You who are the guru of all—
Obeisance and obeisance.
श्रीगौरीनेत्रोसवमङ्गलाय
तत्प्राणनाथाय रसप्रदाय ।
सदा समुत्कण्ठगोविन्दलीला
गानप्रविणाय नमोऽस्तु तुभ्यम् ॥८॥
śrī-gaurī-netrosava-maṅgalāya
tat-prāṇa-nāthāya rasa-pradāya |
sadā samutkaṇṭha-govinda-līlā-
gāna-praviṇāya namo’stu tubhyam ||8||
Let obeisance
Be ever unto you,
You who are the auspiciousness of a festival
For the eyes of Śrī Gaurī,
You who are the lord of her life-breath,
You who are a bestower of rasa,
You who are adept in singing
Of the līlās of Govinda with intense longing.
एतत् शिवस्याष्टकम् अद्भुतं महत्
शृण्वन् हरिप्रेम लभेत शीघ्रम् ।
ज्ञानं च विज्ञानमपूर्ववैभवं
यो भावपूर्णः परमं समादरम् ॥९॥
etat śivasyāṣṭakam adbhutaṁ mahat
śṛṇvan hari-prema labheta śīghram |
jñānaṁ ca vijñānam apūrva-vaibhavaṁ
yo bhāva-pūrṇaḥ paramaṁ samādaram ||9||
One filled with bhāva
And the highest adoration
Who listen to this wonderful,
Exalted poem of eight verses about Śiva,
Shall swiftly attain the prema for Hari,
As well as knowledge (jñāna), realization (vijñāna),
And unprecedented magnificence.
