Prātaḥ-smaraṇa-stotram
A hymn for morning meditation

प्रातः स्मरामि युगकेलिरसाभिषिक्तं
वृन्दावनं सुरमणीयमुदारवृक्षम् ।
सौरीप्रवाहवृतमात्मगुणप्रकाशं
युग्माङ्घ्रिरेणुकणिकाञ्चितसर्वसत्त्वम् ॥१॥
prātaḥ smarāmi yuga-keli-rasābhiṣiktaṁ
vṛndāvanaṁ suramaṇīyam udāra-vṛkṣam |
saurī-pravāha-vṛtam ātma-guṇa-prakāśaṁ
yugmāṅghri-reṇu-kaṇikāñcita-sarva-sattvam ||1||
In the morning,
I meditate on Vṛndāvana—
Sprinkled with the rasa of the Couple’s play,
Most delightful,
Replete with its grand [wish-fulfilling] tree,
Enveloped by the flow of the Śaurī [viz., the Yamunā],
And brilliant with its own qualities—
Where every being is graced
By particles of the Couple’s foot-dust.
प्रातः स्मरामि दधिघोषविनीतनिद्रं
निद्रावसानरमणीयमुखानुरागम् ।
उन्निद्रपद्मनयनं नवनीरदाभं
हृद्यानवद्यललनाञ्चितवामभागम् ॥२॥
prātaḥ smarāmi dadhi-ghoṣa-vinīta-nidraṁ
nidrāvasāna-ramaṇīya-mukhānurāgam |
unnidra-padma-nayanaṁ nava-nīradābhaṁ
hṛdyānavadya-lalanāñcita-vāma-bhāgam || 2||
In the morning,
I meditate on he whose sleep is broken
By the sound of [churning] yoghurt,
He whose delightful face is reddened [alt., impassioned]
After the conclusion of his sleep,
He of fully blossomed lotus eyes,
He of fresh raincloud complexion,
He whose left side is graced
By the irreproachable Lady
Dearest to his heart [viz., Śrī Rādhā].
प्रातर्भजामि शयनोत्थितयुग्मरूपं
सर्वेश्वरं सुखकरं रसिकेशभूपम् ।
अन्योन्यकेलिरसचिह्नसखीदृगौघं
सख्यावृतं सुरतकाममनोहरं च ॥३॥
prātar bhajāmi śayanotthita-yugma-rūpaṁ
sarveśvaraṁ sukhakaraṁ rasikeśa-bhūpam |
anyonya-keli-rasa-cihna-sakhī-dṛg-aughaṁ
sakhyāvṛtaṁ surata-kāma-manoharaṁ ca ||3||
In the morning,
I worship the Form of the Couple arisen from bed,
The delightful Īśvaras of all,
The Monarchs of the masters among relishers of rasa,
They who are surrounded by their sakhīs,
A flood for the eyes of their sakhīs
By virtue of the marks [visible on their bodies]
Caused by the rasa of their play with one another,
And captivating to the mind
By virtue of their desire for amorous delight.
प्रातर्भजे सुरतसारपयोधिचिह्नं
गण्डस्थलेन नयनेन च सन्दधानौ ।
रत्याद्यशेषशुभदौ समुपेतकामौ
श्रीराधिकावरपुरन्दरपुण्यपुञ्जौ ॥४॥
prātar bhaje surata-sāra-payodhi-cihnaṁ
gaṇḍa-sthalena nayanena ca sandadhānau |
raty-ādy-aśeṣa-śubhadau samupeta-kāmau
śrī-rādhikā-vara-purandara-puṇya-puñjau ||4|||
In the morning,
I worship the Two bearing in full
With their cheeks and eyes
The signs of an ocean of the essence of amorous delight,
The Two Bestowers of all fortunes beginning with love (rati),
The Two filled with desire [for one another],
The Two Embodiments of Virtue—
Beautiful Rādhikā and the Best of Lovers [viz., Śrī Kṛṣṇa].
प्रातर्धरामि हृदयेन हृदीक्षणीयं
युग्मस्वरूपमनिशं सुमनोहरं च ।
लावण्यधाम ललनाभिरुपेयमान-
मुत्थाप्यमानमनुमेयमशेषवेषैः ॥५॥॥
prātar dharāmi hṛdayena hṛd-īkṣaṇīyaṁ
yugma-svarūpam aniśaṁ sumanoharaṁ ca |
lāvaṇya-dhāma lalanābhir upeyamānam
utthāpyamānam anumeyam aśeṣa-veṣaiḥ ||5||
In the morning,
I hold with my heart continuously
The object to be beheld in my heart,
The essential form of the Couple
Most captivating of the mind,
The abode of loveliness
Being approached,
Awakened,
And adorned by their ladies [i.e., sakhīs]
With endless attire.
प्रातर्ब्रवीमि युगलावपि सोमराजौ
राधामुकुन्दपशुपालसुतौ वरिष्ठौ ।
गोविन्दचन्द्रवृषभानुसुतौ वरिष्ठौ
सर्वेश्वरौ स्वजनपालनतत्परेशौ ॥६॥
prātar bravīmi yugalāv api somarājau
rādhā-mukunda-paśupāla-sutau variṣṭhau |
govinda-candra-vṛṣabhānu-sutau variṣṭhau
sarveśvarau svajana-pālana-tatpareśau ||6||
In the morning,
I speak of the Couple,
The Two Moons,
The excellent Rādhā and Cowherd’s Son Mukunda,
The excellent Govinda-moon and Daughter of Vṛṣabhānu,
The Īśvaras of all,
The Īśas intent upon nourishing
Persons who are their own.
प्रातर्नमामि युगलाङ्घ्रिसरोजकोश-
मष्टाङ्गयुक्तवपुषा भवदुःखदारम् ।
वृन्दावने सुविचरन्तमुदारचिह्नं
लक्ष्म्या उरोजधृतकुङ्कुमरागपुष्टम् ॥७॥॥
prātar namāmi yugalāṅghri-saroja-kośam
aṣṭāṅga-yukta-vapuṣā bhava-duḥkha-dāram |
vṛndāvane suvicarantam udāra-cihnaṁ
lakṣmyā uroja-dhṛta-kuṅkuma-rāga-puṣṭam ||7|||
In the morning,
With eight parts of my body engaged
I offer obeisance to the Couple’s lotus-bud feet,
The destroyers of the suffering of material existence,
Widely roaming about in Vṛndāvana
Replete with extensive marks
And nourished by the kumkum colorant
Worn by Lakṣmī over her breasts
[Before it becomes smeared on the Couple’s feet].
प्रातर्नमामि वृषभानुसुतापदाब्जं
नेत्रालिभिः परिणुतं व्रजसुन्दरीणाम् ।
प्रेमातुरेण हरिणा सुविशारदेन
श्रीमद्व्रजेशतनयेन सदाभिवन्द्यम् ॥८॥
prātar namāmi vṛṣabhānu-sutā-padābjaṁ
netrālibhiḥ pariṇutaṁ vraja-sundarīṇām |
premātureṇa hariṇā suviśāradena
śrīmad-vrajeśa-tanayena sadābhivandyam ||8||
In the morning,
I offer obeisance to the Daughter of Vṛṣabhānu’s lotus feet,
Which are celebrated by the eyes of the beauties of Vraja [i.e., the sakhīs]
And always highly adorable
To the most adroit, blessed Son of Vraja’s king—
Hari beset with prema.
सञ्चितनीयमनुमृग्यमभीष्टदोहं
संसारतापशमनं चरणं महार्हम् ।
नन्दात्मजस्य सततं मनसा गिरा च
संसेवयामि वपुषा प्रणयेन रम्यम् ॥९॥
sañcita-nīyam anumṛgyam abhīṣṭa-dohaṁ
saṁsāra-tāpa-śamanaṁ caraṇaṁ mahārham |
nandātmajasya satataṁ manasā girā ca
saṁsevayāmi vapuṣā praṇayena ramyam ||9|||
Most worthy of being gained,
Most worthy of being sought,
The bestowers of one’s desired object,
The quellers of the suffering of saṁsāra,
Most worthy of being adored—
With mind, speech, and body,
And with uninhibited love,
I continuously worship in full
The delightful feet of Nanda’s Son.
प्रातः स्तवमिमं पुण्यं प्रातरुत्थाय यः पठेत् ।
सर्वकालं क्रियास्तस्य सफलाः स्युः सदा ध्रुवाः ॥१०॥
prātaḥ stavam imaṁ puṇyaṁ prātar utthāya yaḥ paṭhet |
sarva-kālaṁ kriyās tasya saphalāḥ syuḥ sadā dhruvāḥ ||10|||
The activity of one who shall arise in the morning
And recite this auspicious morning hymn
Shall be successful at all times
And everlasting.
इति श्रीनिम्बार्काचार्यविरचितं प्रातःस्मरणस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ।
iti śrī-nimbārkācārya-viracitaṁ prātaḥ-smaraṇa-stotraṁ sampūrṇam |
Thus, the Prātaḥ-smaraṇa-stotram composed by Śrī Nimbārācārya is complete.
