Guest

tṛṇāni bhūmir udakaṁ vāk caturthī ca sūnṛtā

tṛṇāni bhūmir udakaṁ vāk caturthī ca sūnṛtā |
etāny api satāṁ gehe nocchidyante kadācana ||
(Manu Smṛti: 3.101)

“[For a guest] Grasses [i.e., bedding], a place [to rest], water, and, fourth [thing], kind words—even these never fail to be found in the house of the virtuous.”

samprāptāya tv atithaye pradadyād āsanodake |
annaṁ caiva yathāśakti satkṛtya vidhi-pūrvakam ||
(Manu Smṛti: 3.99)

“To a guest who has appeared [of their own accord without an invitation or notice], one should respectfully offer according to rule water [for the person to wash their feet], a seat, and food as per one’s ability.”

harau tuṣṭe gurus tuṣṭo gurau tuṣṭe jagat-trayam ||
(Nārada Pañcarātra 1.6.40)

“Hari himself is satisfied with one with whom a guest is satisfied. When Hari is satisfied, then guru is satisfied, and when guru is satisfied, then the three worlds are satisfied.”

“Be one for whom one’s mother is Deva. “Be one for whom one’s father is Deva. “Be one for whom one’s ācārya is Deva. “Be one for whom one’s guest is Deva.”
