Śrī Śrī Rūpa-Sanātana-stotram

A poem of praise and prayer to Śrī Rūpa and Śrī Sanātana

By Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa

Introduction

Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa is a fourth generation descendant of Śrī Gadādhara Bhaṭṭa, a celebrated poet and disciple of Śrī Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī who came to Vṛndāvana at Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī’s exhortation after Śrī Jīvapāda heard one of Śrī Gadādhara Bhaṭṭa’s poems. Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa’s ancestral lineage is as follows: Śrī Gadādhara Bhaṭṭa > Śrī Rasikottaṁsa > Śrī Kṛṣṇa Bhaṭṭa > Śrī Lāla Bhaṭṭa > Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa. Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭta was a contemporary in Vraja Maṇḍala of Śrī Viśvanātha Cakravartīpāda, whom he praises in one of his Sanskrit words, the Vaiṣṇava-vandanā. Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭta also praises his father, Śrī Lāla Bhaṭṭa, as being his śikṣā-guru in verse five of this Rūpa-Sanātana-stotram and in verses four to seven of his Rādhā-kuṇḍa-stava. It is further understood from a Sanskrit commentary on another work of Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa, the Madhu-kelivallī, that Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa is initiated in the disciplic line of his ancestor Śrī Gadādhara Bhaṭṭa, as would be expected, but the exact name of his guru is not known from his writings, as Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa offers homage to his guru in verse three of his Rādhā-kuṇḍa-stava but does not mention his guru’s name.

The following is a hymn of forty-nine verses in which Śrī Govardhana Bhaṭṭa praises and offers prayers to Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmīpāda and Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmīpāda.

Here [in this world],
Some may become delighted by obtaining a jewel,
Such as a pearl or sapphire.
Others may become absorbed in the bliss of Brahman.
Some [others] may become intent upon the Supreme Īśa [viz., Nārāyaṇa].
We [on the contrary] seek the Emerald
Inlaid with the golden streak of Rādhā
In Gokula,
Who was held in the casket of the heart
Of the blessed son of Vyāsa [viz., Śrī Śukadeva],
And has been revealed by followers of Gaura.

vande caitanya-devaṁ parijana-sahitaṁ cāru-cāmīkarābham ||2||

[He who is] Completely filled with Rādhā’s bhāva,
Whirling about
As a result of drinking the rasa of Vraja,
Very briskly dancing
Amid bhaktas
And the incomparable sweetness
Of kīrtana of Kṛṣṇa’s names,
Showering down an ocean of prema,
And out of paramount compassion
Flooding the three worlds [with that prema]—
I offer obeisance to he of charming golden luster,
Attended by his companions,
Caitanyadeva.

[He] Who being disconcerted by separation
From Śrī Caitanya Hari
Immediately forsook
The abode of the Lord of the universe [viz., Jagannātha Purī]
And went after [Śrī Caitanya]
Although [he was] a votary of kṣetra-sannyāsa,
And who triumphs showering down
A milk-ocean of prema
For the lotus feet of Govinda—
I offer obeisance to him,
Śrīla Gadādhara,
Abounding in compassion,
A form of Rādhikā.

Devoted to the reddish luster of the lotus
Of Śrī Govinda’s feet,
Absorbed in the ocean of servitude to Rādhikā,
Resolute in regard to the essential nature (tattva)
Of the Lord of the heart (Ātmeśa) [alt., of the self (ātmā) and the Lord (Īśa)]
After hearing the true knowledge [lit., heart] (hṛdayam)
[Found] In the multitudes of Purāṇas,
Difficult to understand for the wicked,
And highly honorable for bhaktas
Devoted to the Prince of Vraja—
I offer obeisance to the tīrthapādas [lit., “they whose feet worthy objects of worship”]
Endowed with unlimited potency
And replete with boundless ingenuity [alt., arts].

[He] Who listened closely
With great delight
To the blessed Rāsa-līlā festival [i.e., SB 10.29–33],
The Vaṁśī-gīta [i.e., the Veṇu-gītā, SB 10.21],
And the Yugma-gīta [i.e., the Yugala-gītā, SB 10.35]
At the time of blockage [of the throat] because of phlegm
During the departing of the vital airs (prāṇas) [from the body],
[Yet then] Sang the taintless name of Kṛṣṇa with his mouth,
Beheld Mādhava in the forest,
Arose,
And cast away the vital airs [of his own accord]—
I praise him,
My father and instructing (śikṣā)- guru [viz., Śrī Lāla Bhaṭṭa].

[He] By whose grace a fool understands
The blessed forest of Vṛndā,
The abode of Gokula,
The gopīs,
Rādhikā,
Govinda,
And the entire worldview of the Vaiṣṇavas
Established in the various Āgamas—
May you all continuously offer obeisance to him,
The follower of Caitanyadeva
And elder brother of Rūpa [viz., Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmī]
Adept in delivering the humble.

Where am I,
A fool
Enmeshed in desires for objects of the senses
Roaming along the path of saṁsāra?
And where is the festival of servitude
To the blessed feet of Vṛṣabhānu’s Daughter?
[I feel myself to be far, far away from that ultimate blessedness.]
Yet by contemplating this river of your compassion,
So expansive
And forcibly purifying of the [entire] world,
Including [even] outcastes,
I become delighted and worship you,
O elder brother of Rūpa!

He who,
Accompanied by his elder brother,
By his own wish
Forsook a thornless [i.e., trouble-free] kingdom,
Grasp the two lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya,
Became maddened at heart,
Took up residence in the land of Vraja,
Produced an ocean of rasa
And showered that [rasa] in all directions—
O blessed Rūpa!
May you accept me,
The lowest,
As your own.

Seeing the world sunk in the dense darkness of delusion
And becoming filled with compassion,
Blessed Rūpa,
Situated in a cottage
On the bank of the Yamunā,
Composed on the order of Caitanyadeva
Elegant texts about paramount ujjvala-rasa [i.e., madhura-rasa]
Which are replete with the plays of Gāndharvikā and Mādhava
And praised by master poets.

By hearing whose poetry—
Which was inspired by Śrī Gauracandra
[As he was] Met with in the interior of the heart,
Which is filled with multitudes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s sports,
And which is replete with the beauty of Vṛndāvana—
Multitudes of bhaktas of the Son of Nanda
Experience trembling, tears, and horripilation,
Waver,
Roll about,
Becoming of maddened mind,
Leap around,
And dance—
In the heart of one who can proceed
Taking shelter in full in him,
Taintless Rūpa,
Who is devoted to the service of the lotus feet of Rādhā,
Dear to Caitanyadeva,
Of mind fixed upon the sports of Vṛndāvana,
Absorbed in meditation upon the gopīs,
And situated in a cottage on the bank of the Kṛṣṇā [i.e., Yamunā],
Bhakti dances profusely.

Human beings remain
For so long of heart filled with anguish created by frightful Kali,
For so long eager for karma,
For so long involved in the multitude of yoga’s arts,
For so long naiyāyikas [i.e., students of Indic logic (nyāya)],
And for so long intent upon Brahman—
So long as the texts dear to Gaura
Arising from the mouth of blessed Rūpa
Do not forcibly enter the path of the ear.

Bhaktas on the surface of the earth
Endlessly maddened by prema
Who like he born of the urn [viz., Agastya Muni]
Drink continuously
From the wondrous ocean of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa’s rasa
That has secreted from the lotus
Of blessed Rūpa’s mouth
By the wish of Caitanyadeva—
Hā!—
Their thirst for that alone
Doubles daily anew.

He by whom preeminent, elegant verses like tuṇḍe tāṇḍavinī … were composed,
[He] Whom Hari—Gaura—immediately praised with delight
After seeing the incomparable [hand-written] letters resembling pearls [he had written]
As he [viz., Gaura] became maddened,
Whirled about,
And danced surrounded by bhaktas—
Who here [in this world] can attain servitude to Rādhā’s feet
Without the company of him, Rūpa?

He by whom this entire world
Has been completely submerged
In the ocean of Vraja’s rasa,
[He] Even by hearing whose name
A person attains bhakti to Kṛṣṇa’s feet,
And [he] in whose heart Caitanyadeva—Hari,
Out of immense grace,
Placed the jewel of his own wealth in totality—
Pray tell,
O friend,
Who on the earth is greater than [he,] Rūpa?

Sometimes roaming about along the banks of the Daughter of the Sun [viz., the Yamunā],
[Sometimes] Calling out continuously
The names of Vraja’s Moon,
[Sometimes] Dancing overwhelmed by prema,
[Sometimes] Writing of the charming play of Rādhā and Nanda’s Son,
Sometimes remembering Gaura,
And sometimes listening,
Rūpa sports [in Vraja].

Wearing a single quilt,
Bearing a water-pot in hand,
Delightedly singing and meditating
On the līlā of Rādhikā’s Beloved,
Dwelling at the base of tree,
Taking Kṛṣṇa’s names,
Accepting alms like a bee (mādhukari-bhikṣā),
Or sometimes a full meal (sthūla-bhikṣā)
From a well-to-do brāhmaṇa—
Rūpa—
Lower than the grass
And tolerant like tree—
Dwells on the edge of the forest [in Vraja].

Devoted to servitude
To the lotus feet of Gāndharvā,
Dear to Caitanyadeva,
Given to observing the grace of blessed Govinda,
Desirous of Vṛndāvana,
A pleaser of bhaktas,
Daily of bowed head,
Honoring of all beings,
And of speech superior to nectar,
A person following Rūpa
Triumphs!

Although possessed of uncontrolled senses,
Although having committed endless offenses,
Although having rejected Mādhava
As a result of unwholesome company (asat-saṅga),
And although having engaged in an affair with someone else’s wife,
Who wanders [any further] in the ocean of saṁsāra
After serving blessed Rūpa,
Who is praised by the best
Of Caitanya’s dear companions
And at heart filled with compassion?

Some become conquered
By the power of frightful Kali,
Some follow a heretical path,
Some become devoted to karma,
Others find relief on the path of jñāna,
And some become adorned with bhakti.
Very rare ones even among them become eagerly desirous of Kṛṣṇa.
[But] Who [among even those very rare bhaktas] becomes of heart covetous of servitude
To the blessed feet of Rādhā
Without Rūpa?

Disregarding the lotus feet of Rūpa,
Does one who is eagerly desirous
Of servitude to the feet of Rādhā
Not [in effect] build a lofty house
In a pleasant spot on a sand-bank?
Can one not touch the heavens with one’s arms?
Can one not quickly cover the sun with a bunch of dust?
Can one not make a lame person walk?

Who do not foster bhakti to the blessed lotus feet of Rūpa—
Would Caitanyadeva—Hari,
Of mind delighted by the waves of the gopīs’ bhāva,
Come to the heart
Of those persons?
And where would discussion of Rādhā’s lotus feet [be]?
The sweetness of Vṛndāvana that is heard about
Remains afar from them.

What abode of eyes in this world [i.e., what seer]
Procures the two blessed lotus feet of Govinda—
The removers of the suffering caused by the serpent of time,
The ornaments of Vṛndāvana,
They which are worshiped by the eyes of the ladies of Vraja,
They which are situated atop
The opening buds of blessed Rādhā’s breasts,
They which are to be meditated upon
By the best among connoisseurs of rasa—
Without gracious Rūpa?

Is able to understand
The taintless truth of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam,
Who can cause the intellect to grasp and describe
The sweetness of Vṛndāvana,
And who can fix the mind
On the supremely astonishing, taintless figure
Of the cowherd village Prince,
Without the blessed reservoir of compassion
And treasury of qualities
Rūpa,
Along with his relations
[e.g., his elder brother Sanātana, nephew Jīva, and other companions]?

Exhibiting knitted brows,
And becoming embellished by a showering
In the abounding waters
Of an ocean of bliss

Non-attachment (vairāgya),
Vidhi- and rāga-bhakti [i.e., vaidhī- and rāgānugā-bhakti],
The twelve different taintless rasas,
The prema of the residents of Vraja
Highly praised by the learned seers led by Śuka,
The gopīs’ paramount “capable attachment” (samartha-rati)
Which shines ultimately as mahābhāva,
Or the mādana [i.e., the mādanākhyā-mahābhāva, manifest] in Rādhā

Preoccupied with wife and son
And possessed of pride in your learning, body, ancestry, and so on?
Quickly think of death.
Come to the land of Vraja
And worship Rādhā and Mukunda,
Who are most maddened [with love].
Take shelter in blessed Rūpa,
And bring the lotus feet of Gauracandra into your heart.

How many births
As an animal, human, deva, and so on
Have you not had?
Hā!
Why having received these births
Do you fall into the dark well of delusion?
[Because you neglect to devote yourself to the worship of Bhagavān].
Therefore, quickly worship the feet of Rūpa.
Think always of beautiful Rādhikā and Mādhava.
Do not foolishly throw away
The great jewel of human life on this earth.

Enough with sacred places (tīrthas).
Enough with charities.
Ahaha!
Enough with yogas,
Along with restraints (yamas) and regulations (niyamas),
And discrimination between elements (sāṅkhya).
Indeed, what of tasteless (virasa) discussion of mukti?
Aho!
And what of completely vain objects of enjoyment
Because of which downfall in material existence becomes destined?
[Enough with all of these once and for all!]
[Instead] Always remember the līlās of Vraja’s Couple taught by Rūpa,
O friend!

Why out of delusion do you roam about
In this mine of enmity and so on—
This world of transmigration (saṁsāra) ultimately utterly devoid of taste (rasa)—
Because of various śāstras that [just] mislead the mind?
[Instead,] Study the multitude of Rūpa’s works,
Which are abundant with showers of Rādhā and Mādhava’s play
And filled with blessed thirst for Kṛṣṇa,
O friend,
I am telling [you] the provisions for the journey [on the path of saṁsāra]
And the truth.

O friend,
Will this wife, son, brother, house, or wealth [of yours] go with [you]?
Do not waste such a rare birth
[As a human being as you have received]
With futile worry [about relatives, possessions, and so on].
Always take shelter in blessed Rūpa along with Sanātana,
And worship Gaurāṅgadeva.

By the difficult to control senses,
O friend,
Indeed for so long you certainly will repeatedly
Undergo severe suffering,
And for so long you will be of heart beset
With the frightful anguish of Kali
And constantly deprived,
So long as your mind
Does not come to the two lotus feet of Rūpa.

Worship the bestower of longing and heartache
For the covetous Youthful Couple in the bowers of Vṛndāvana—
Blessed Rūpa.
Do not leave the land of Vraja.
And throw away all pride.

Beginning with your wife and son
To be transitory.
Brahmā, who abides for two parārdhas [i.e., 200,000 billions of years]—
Even he is situated in the mouth of the serpent of death.
Know human life
To be rare to attain [even] for the suras [i.e., the devas of Svarga and sages of the higher planes].
O Mind!
Relinquish other talks,
And remember the elephant fixated upon the lotus
Of the feet of Vṛṣabhānu’s Daughter—
Blessed Rūpa.

Because of the burden of the body,
The end of which is in feces, insects, and ashes.
Do not desire your own birth
With an all-devouring female fiend.
O Mind,
Always avoid the vicinity
Of sensualists who foster desire for women.
Why do you not worship Rūpa,
The bestower of pure love
For the Youthful Couple of Vraja?

Situated at the base of a shining desire-tree,
Then quickly worship Rūpa.

rādhā-mādhava-keli-vāridhi-rasaṁ pātuṁ samutkaṇṭhase
tvaṁ ced rūpa-padāmbujaṁ bhaja sakhe tarhi pratītyādṛtaḥ ||46||

If bearing the form of a sakhī
With eyes shining through the openings
In a bower in Vṛndāvana,
And a body replete with stupor, perspiration, discoloration,
As well as trembling, tears, and horripilation,
You long to drink
The rasa of the ocean of Rādhā and Mādhava’s play,
Then,
O friend,
Being eager by virtue of conviction [alt., clear apprehension, or, delight]
Worship the lotus feet of Rūpa.

राधाकुण्डतटे समञ्जुलतमे वासन्तिकाभिर्मुदा
पुष्पालीं वनमालिकाविरचनयाचिन्वतीं कौतुकात् ।

undhantaṁ bata rādhikām atitarāṁ tuṣyantam antar muhuḥ
kṛṣṇaṁ bhartsayituṁ yadīcchasi sakhe tvaṁ tarhi rūpaṁ śraya ||47||

If on bank of Rādhā Kuṇḍa,
Most charming with vāsantikā (hiptage) vines,
You desire to chastise Kṛṣṇa,
Who repeatedly becomes exceedingly pleased within
While blocking Rādhikā
As she out of mirth
Is delightedly picking flowers
For the purpose of stringing a forest garland,
Then,
O friend,
Take shelter in Rūpa.

कौलं धर्ममतीत्य भीतिमभितो घोरान्धकारं वनं
कालिन्दीं च पयोदसंप्लुतसृतिं सङ्केतकुञ्जालये ।

prāptāyāḥ sarajaḥ-padāmbuja-yugaṁ gāndharvikāyā nijaiḥ
keśair mārjiyitum yadīccchasi sakhe tarhy eva rūpaṁ bhaja ||48||

If you desire to wipe
With your own hair
The two soiled lotus feet of Gāndharvikā,
Who has reached the refuge of a bower for a tryst
After completely crossing over
Ancestral law,
Fear,
The frightfully dark forest,
The Kālindī [i.e., Yamunā],
And the path flooded with water [from heavily falling rain],
O friend,
Then indeed worship Rūpa.

चैतन्यप्रियपार्षदानुगमतिं श्रीकृष्णसेवारतं

hā śrī-rūpa tathā sanātana-vibho baddhāñjaliḥ prārthaye ||49||

May association with those scoundrels seized by Kali,
Who even after being sheltered in their own guru
Possessed of resolve following to the dear companions of Caitanya
And devoted to the worship of Śrī Kṛṣṇa,
Nevertheless are rejected
And go down a wrongful path,
Never occur
[Even] By mistake.
Hā!
Blessed Rūpa and Master Sanātana!
With joined palms, I pray [for this].
