na hi para-mata-khaṇḍanāya vādair

na hi para-mata-khaṇḍanāya vādair
na ca nija-mata-saṅgrahāya loke |
api tu nija-mano’valambanārthaṁ
param iha kila naḥ prayatna eṣaḥ ||
(Svātma-pramodinī-ṭīkā on Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi: 15.260)

“Neither for the sake of refuting the views of others with disputation, nor for the sake of consolidation of our own view in the world, this effort here of ours [i.e., this Svātma-pramodinī-ṭīkā, meaning, this commentary entitled ‘Delighting (pramodinī) one’s own (sva) self (ātma)’ on Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi] is only for the sake of support for our own mind [i.e., it has been written only for the purpose of supporting our own personal practice of absorbing the mind in worship of Śrī Kṛṣṇa].”

mauna-vrata-śruta-tapo-’dhyayana-sva-dharma-
vyākhyā-raho-japa-samādhaya āpavargyāḥ |
prāyaḥ paraṁ puruṣa te tv ajitendriyāṇāṁ
vārtā bhavanty uta na vātra tu dāmbhikānām ||
(Śrīmad Bhāgavatam: 7.9.46; cited in Bhakti Sandarbha 168)

“O Puruṣa [i.e., O indwelling Regulator], the means to apavarga [i.e., mokṣa]—silence, rites, hearing [i.e. learning the Vedas], austerities, studying, [observing one’s] svadharma, explaining [i.e., teaching the Vedas to others], [residing in] solitude, japa, and samādhi [i.e., meditation]—generally here [i.e., in saṁsāra], however, become mere livelihoods of those of uncontrolled senses, and sometimes, however, not even that for the deceitful [since the fruitfulness of deceitfulness is uncertain].”

caturbhiś ca prakāraiḥ vidyopayuktā bhavati, āgama-kālena svādhyāya-kālena pravacana-kālena vyavahāra-kāleneti |
(Mahābhāṣya: 1.1.1)

“Knowledge is acquired in four ways: at the time of receiving [i.e., receiving it from an ācārya], at the time of personally studying [i.e., reviewing it, reflecting on it, reciting it, etc.], at the time of speaking [i.e., teaching it to others], and at the time of applying [i.e., performing sacrifices, navigating challenges, etc. using it].”

āpane āsvādi bhakti karilā prakāśe ||

“To deliver the jīvas, Prabhu travelled from country to country. By personally tasting bhakti, he illuminated it.”
